Terrier is a larger breed of dogs that has about 27 types of dogs under its category. It is believed that most of the terrier breeds were developed in British Islands. Pekingese or Pekinese dogs is a toy breed of dog originated in China. Pekingese are also referred to as Lion dogs due to resemblance with Chinese Lions. Chinese people love this dog very much and it can be seen from various pieces of Chinese artwork depicting Pekingese dogs. Though the breed is believed to be over 200 years old but has hardly undergone any changes. Features of Pekingese dogs: head is broad; eyes are sparkling, large and dark; ears long and drooping and feathered; flat and dark face with wrinkled muzzles; thick and short neck; coat is straight and flowing, long and feathered; coat comes in many color but golden and red color is common. Qualities and temperament of Pekingese dogs: brave and courageous little dogs, athletic, independent, affectionate, sensitive, obstinate, stubborn, and loyal. Weight of Pekingese dogs is about 8 to 10 pounds and height is about 6 to 9 inches. Average life span is around 10 to 15 years. Pointer dogs become good watch dogs.

Schnauzers are German breed of dogs. The word Schnauzer is derived from German word Schnauze which means distinctly furry muzzles of Schnauzer. Schnauzer breeds of dogs are categorized into three types based on the size. Three types of Schnauzers are miniature, standard and giant. Miniature Schnauzers are less than 15 inches tall, standard Schnauzers are around 20 inches tall and giant Schnauzers are around 25 inches tall. Few common characteristics of all the three Schnauzers: strong sense of smell, intelligence, energetic, obedient, loyalty and alertness. Color of Schnauzers: black, salt, and pepper and also white but in Europe. Miniature Schnauzers also come in silver color and giant Schnauzers are generally found in black color.

Giant Schnauzers are most preferred as watch dogs by farmers for hunting rats. Schnauzers do not get along well with other dogs if they not socialized properly from young age. Life span of Schnauzers is approximately 15 years.

Pomeranian or fondly called Pom is a toy breed of dog due to its very small size. Pomeranian comes from a larger breed of dogs German Spitz. Term Pomeranian comes from a region with name Pomerania that is situated in Western Europe and now a part of eastern Germany and northern Poland. Features of Pomeranian dogs: tiny and fluffy dog with wedge shaped head which makes it slightly resembling to Fox; ears are small and erect; eyes are almond shaped, bright, dark and highly expressive; distinct feathered tail carried over to its back and flat; top coat is fluffy, soft and thick whereas undercoat is long, straight and coarse with varying coat colors like blue, orange, brown, white, black, cream and also multi colored.

Water spaniel is a general name given to different breeds of water dogs which are spaniel. American water spaniel, Irish water spaniel, English water spaniel and tweed water spaniel are four breeds of water spaniel dogs. English and Tweed breeds are believed to be almost extinct. Weight of water spaniel dog is between 25 to 45 pounds and height is between 15 to 18 inches. They live for an average 12 to 15 years. American water spaniels are very good swimmers and can also swim in very turbulent water.

Water spaniels are preferred as hunting dogs for hunting grouse, quails, pheasants, ducks and rabbits. They are very good at hunting in water, woods and uneven terrains. They are active, muscular, tough, friendly, intelligent, obedient and energetic. They make a good companion especially for children. They are also suitable as good guard dogs. Water spaniels are easy to train and harsh methods should not be used for training.

Welsh terrier, nickname Welshie or WT is a member of terrier family of dogs and comes from Wales, United Kingdom. Welshie is considered as suitable for hunting fox and birds and its origins date back to year 1800 where it existed in Wales. It is a sturdy, compact and medium size dog with weight around 20 pounds and height around 16 inches. Its color is tan through out head, legs and underbelly and black elsewhere. Welsh terriers are mostly black at the time of birth but during or sometimes after one year the color changes to tan and black. Temperament of Welshie is consummately that of a typical terrier i.e. vigilant, active, and cheerful.

Rarely one finds a Welshie that is shy or timid. They are always full of energy and tiredness is rarely noticed. They are friendly with people as well as with other dogs. Life span of Welshie is about 10 to 12 years.

Whippet Dog a member of sight-hound family and bearing physical resemblance to a small greyhound originates from England. Extreme popularity of Whippet dog has led to extensive usage of Whippet name for cars to cookies. Whippets are medium sized with its weight between 25 to 45 pounds, height between 18 to 22 inches. They live an average life of about 12 to 15 years. Whippets can be found in large variety of color like black, white, cream, red and blue with different types of patches, spots and blazes anywhere on the body. While judging Whippets, color is not given any importance.

There are various breed of dogs that are specially bred for hunting wolves. These breeds are referred to as Wolfhound dogs. It is a hybrid breed of dogs and wolves that retains most of the characteristics of wolves. In current generations Wolfhounds are called as wolf-dogs or wolf-hybrid.
