Dogs specifically trained for law enforcement agencies and Police are called as Police dogs. Hurting or killing a Police dog is criminal offense under various acts and statutes. Various acts and law by various countries have set out stringent punishment for such offences under criminal acts. Punishments are in addition to the punishment prescribed under animal cruelty prevention laws.

Police or other law enforcement agencies are empowered to use lethal force for protecting the life of a Police dog. In many countries, Police dogs are dressed with Bullet proof vests. Police dogs that die while on duty are considered as martyrs and given full honors associated with martyrdom of any Police personnel. Police dogs are used for many services such as enforcement of public order, illicit substance tracking and narcotics related crimes, tracking missing persons or dogs, bomb detection and tracing dead bodies by sensing odor of decomposing bodies. Few popular varieties of dogs preferred as Police dogs: German shepherd, Dutch shepherd, Labrador retriever, Doberman, American pit bull terrier and Belgian Malinois.

Terrier is a larger breed of dogs that has about 27 types of dogs under its category. It is believed that most of the terrier breeds were developed in British Islands. All the terriers vary in size from each other. They have some distinct qualities and features. Basically terriers were used for controlling the menace of vermin and small animals like rats, rabbits and foxes on the farms and agricultural estates. Some breeds of terriers are excellent in hunting river rats and otters in deep water. Nowadays most of the terriers are used as guard dogs, companion and family pets as they are loyal, affectionate and intelligent.

There are different ways of categorizing terriers. They are categorized as large sized or small sized. They are also categorized as per the utility such as hunting type, toy type and bull type. Except city bred Manchester terrier, all the terriers are considered as country dogs.

There are various breed of dogs that are specially bred for hunting wolves. These breeds are referred to as Wolfhound dogs. It is a hybrid breed of dogs and wolves that retains most of the characteristics of wolves. In current generations Wolfhounds are called as wolf-dogs or wolf-hybrid. Traditionally Wolfhounds that were bred to hunt wolves were of only two categories – Russian and Irish. Unlike Wolfhounds, the present wolf-dogs or wolf-hybrids are of 3 to 4 categories that include American Tundra Shepherd, and Czechoslovakian wolf-dog. Wolfhounds are generally heavy and muscular.
