Setter dogs come from a larger breed of dogs categorized as gun dogs. Setter dog is used to assist in hunting game for hunting quail, pheasant and grouse. Setter dogs breed is believed to have originated from Spain in 15th century and evolved from Spaniels. Subsequent to export in France and England, breeds were developed into present day varieties.

Setter dogs have derived their name from a peculiar characteristic. Setters use scent of game for searching the hunt. As soon as the game is located, setters freeze there and there instead of chasing after the game. This distinctive stance or crouch or set upon finding the game led to the name setter.

Long, smooth and silky coat is the easily recognizable feature of Setter dogs. Setter dogs are playful, intelligent, cheerful, friendly to people and dogs, and highly energetic. Setter dogs have six breed of dogs that include English setter, Irish setter, Irish red and white setter, Gordon setter, Black welsh setter and Russian setter.
