There are various breed of dogs that are specially bred for hunting wolves. These breeds are referred to as Wolfhound dogs. It is a hybrid breed of dogs and wolves that retains most of the characteristics of wolves. In current generations Wolfhounds are called as wolf-dogs or wolf-hybrid. Traditionally Wolfhounds that were bred to hunt wolves were of only two categories – Russian and Irish. Unlike Wolfhounds, the present wolf-dogs or wolf-hybrids are of 3 to 4 categories that include American Tundra Shepherd, and Czechoslovakian wolf-dog. Wolfhounds are generally heavy and muscular.

Irish wolfhounds are considered as the tallest breeds all over the world. Wolfhounds are known to stand erect with hind legs as tall as 7 feet. Wolfhounds color is normally gray but can be black, white or red. Strength and graciousness are two main qualities of Irish Wolfhounds. Wolfhounds have to be fed with high quality and heavy food. Wolfhounds are intelligent and extremely loyal to their masters.
