Terrier is a larger breed of dogs that has about 27 types of dogs under its category. It is believed that most of the terrier breeds were developed in British Islands. All the terriers vary in size from each other. They have some distinct qualities and features. Basically terriers were used for controlling the menace of vermin and small animals like rats, rabbits and foxes on the farms and agricultural estates. Some breeds of terriers are excellent in hunting river rats and otters in deep water. Nowadays most of the terriers are used as guard dogs, companion and family pets as they are loyal, affectionate and intelligent.
There are different ways of categorizing terriers. They are categorized as large sized or small sized. They are also categorized as per the utility such as hunting type, toy type and bull type. Except city bred Manchester terrier, all the terriers are considered as country dogs.
